In pure state gold has excellent chemical stability and so is resistant to corrosion and oxidation which are major concerns when a metal is used for body piercing jewely.

Anyway body jewelry is never made of pure gold (24K) as it's too soft for this application.

Gold purity is measured in karats:

14 karat gold is 58% pure gold.
18 karat gold is 75% pure gold.
22 karat gold is 92% pure gold.

Yellow gold is made combining: Gold (Au), Copper (Cu), Silver (Ag), and Zinc (Zn)

White gold is made combining: Gold (Au), Copper (Cu), Palladium (Pd), and Zinc (Zn)

In the jewelry we sell palladium is a substitute for nickel for white gold to eliminate any possible adverse reaction to nickel.

How to take care of your Gold Jewelry

In some cases when people perspire, fatty acids released can cause discoloration of 14K & 18K gold, especially when exposed to warmth and air. This can be worse in semitropical areas.
Discoloration can also occur if precious metal jewelry is worn in oral piercing. This does not happen frequently. If it does happen, the discoloration on the jewelry is only temporary and can be removed easily, with a jewelers cloth or by other means of buffing.
Some antiseptics, cleaners, chlorine and improper sterilization techniques may also discolor gold.
